The idea
Catching huge amounts of the CO2 that currently exists in the air without affecting ecosystems, depleting resources like water and land that are available for agriculture and forestry, and obviously not emitting more CO2 than what we can capture, and store.
Some big companies like Microsoft and Shopify are beginning to pay for catching the CO2 they have emitted. To meet the demand for services, what kind of process could be profitable with the resources that you could receive by selling carbon credits to those companies?
We have a pet idea: a simple technical process like growing bamboo in large containers that can be placed over paved surfaces like free spaces on roads, parking lots, and industrial parks. This will avoid using land suitable for agriculture or forestry and will not affect any ecosystem. Bamboo wood is very versatile; you can make long-lasting products like construction materials and furniture with it. You can add as much value to the wood as you want, making the entire process profitable.
A new industry
In few topics, the scientific community has arrived at a consensus; this is one of the exemptions. 2°C is the maximum increase tolerable to avoid the worst effects of climate change. Preferably, it should not exceed 1.5°C. To achieve this goal, the world needs to reduce its CO2 emissions by 7% each year from now to 2050 and also catch 10 billion tons yearly at that year and beyond. A whole new industry, the Carbon Removal Industry, needs to be developed at an unprecedented speed.
Those scientific concerns are the origins of the nascent Carbon Removal Industry, which now comprises businesses and organizations that focus on developing and deploying technologies and practices to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Their goal is to help address the global challenge of climate change by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The opportunity
